About
Thomas J. Fraley - Painter, Photographer, Landscape Designer
I am a practicing landscape designer and artist, residing on the North Shore outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Raised in Southern Indiana, I fondly remember visiting my grandparents' home and lake cabin in Minnesota: painting, drawing, and appreciating the art of my grandmother, a landscape painter, and the garden of both my grandparents.
Developing an affinity for plants and gardening at an early age, and while thinking of pursuing study in Horticulture, I ultimately decided to attend Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, graduating with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and a minor in French Language and Literature.
As an undergraduate, I undertook several independent studies where I started exploring the use of art as a synthetic tool in the design process. Exploring art and its relation to the landscape, under the guidance of MFA trained photographers, landscape theorists and historians, planners, and poets, allowed me to see beyond the profession, enriching and reigniting my passion for the places I both live in and around, and those i work in. I view my art as a means of memory and artifact, attempting to record both cognitive and physical sense of place of the environs I encounter onto the canvas.
Today in my professional life, I work on the implementation and design of landscapes for discerning clients throughout New England and elsewhere. Outside of work, I enjoy taking care of my large collection of tropical plants and private garden, traveling throughout New England, the West Coast and the Caribbean, and enjoying good food and drink with friends. I also on occasion design outdoor spaces and landscapes for friends and family, believing strongly that landscape should be an extension of everyday life and living and that everyone deserves to have good, affordable, and life enriching spaces.
Places. Things. People.
